Category: Item Information

Consistent, accurate item information is vital to buying, selling and inventory functions. This section deals with elements of information and the ways to pass them to partners in the supply chain. The information includes product description, dimensions (weight and cube) selling units and material safety data sheets (MSDS).


Why do we need this standard and what is the Benefit?

Consistent communication between partners.

Clear communication to consumers.

Enables automation.

Eliminates a variety of errors.

Key Elements For Success

  1. Core or essential field definitions and recommended additional fields.

  2. A brief description (15 characters or less) is needed on the carton label to help warehouse people and to be printed on the sales receipt for customers.

  3. The first 15 characters of the description should identify the product. Include Product Category, Color and Size. Full description should not exceed 30 characters.

  1. If unit or product content included in description, it must be specific and accurate (i.e. silk floral should not be used unless made of silk).

  2. Use standards whenever possible. Check with National Retail Federation (NRF) > Retail Disciplines > Information Technology > Standards

  3. Use Standard Color Abbreviations

  4. Use Standard Price & Units of Measures Abbreviations

  5. Use Standard Shipping Unit Terms and Include Carton Specifications

  6. Weight, length, height, cube for carton and each level

  7. Each = Consumer purchased quantity.

  8. Accurate and standard Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
